Wayne Rooney, former England and Manchester United captain, has been appointed as the new manager of Championship side Plymouth Argyle. This marks Rooney’s fourth managerial role, aiming to finally match his illustrious playing career.

“This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a thrilling project. I’m eager to build a squad that plays expansive, entertaining football for the Green Army,” Rooney said.

At 38, Rooney takes on this challenge after a brief 83-day stint at Birmingham earlier this year, where he managed only two wins in 15 matches, contributing to their relegation to League One. His managerial journey also includes a short spell with DC United in Major League Soccer and a commendable performance at Derby County amid financial turmoil.

Plymouth chairman Simon Hallett praised Rooney: “Throughout the interview process, Wayne demonstrated passion, intelligence, and a strong desire to prove himself. His ambitions align perfectly with ours, making him the ideal candidate to deliver exciting, attacking football and help achieve our club’s mission.”

Plymouth narrowly avoided relegation last season, finishing 21st in the Championship in their first year back in English football’s second tier in 14 years. Now, with Rooney at the helm, the club hopes to soar to new heights.
