In a disturbing incident in Delta State, Nigeria, a man has been arrested for the murder of his close friend over a financial dispute involving ₦30 million. The suspect, identified as Efe Onoetiyi, allegedly killed and buried his friend, Paulinus Okon, after misappropriating the funds entrusted to him.

Incident Details

According to the Delta State Police Command, Paulinus Okon was reported missing on September 8, 2024, after last being seen with his friend, Efe Onoetiyi. Investigations revealed that Efe had diverted the ₦30 million given to him by Paulinus for a building purchase, using the funds for personal gain, including acquiring two plots of land and constructing a duplex.

In an attempt to conceal his actions, Efe misled Paulinus’s family by demanding ₦500,000, claiming it was for a herbalist to locate Paulinus. He further deceived them by alleging that Paulinus had been kidnapped, extorting an additional ₦20,715,000 as ransom.

Arrest and Confession

The police arrested Efe after his inconsistent statements raised suspicion. Further investigation led to the apprehension of three accomplices: Okeimute Gaga, 48; Sunday Ikpeba; and Lawrence Joseph, a 30-year-old herbalist. Okeimute confessed that on September 8, 2024, they took Paulinus to the Orere River in Otokutu, where he was tied to a stake and beheaded. His body was disposed of in the river, and his head was buried at Lawrence Joseph’s shrine.

Legal Proceedings

The suspects are currently in police custody, facing charges related to murder and fraud. The Delta State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and his family.

Public Reaction

This heinous crime has sparked outrage within the community, highlighting concerns over trust and the lengths individuals may go to cover up fraudulent activities. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to authorities promptly.

Conclusion

The tragic death of Paulinus Okon serves as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of financial disputes and betrayal. As the legal process unfolds, the community watches closely, hoping for justice to be served and for measures to be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
