The Defence Headquarters reacted on Friday to the killing of five soldiers stationed in Abia State to protect citizens.

Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, in a statement to Vanguard, accused the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of carrying out the attack. The military vowed a fierce response to the killing of its troops at a checkpoint in Abia State.

“Troops of OP UDO KA deployed at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area near Aba metropolis in Abia State were attacked and tragically killed by IPOB/ESN terrorists.

“The troops, stationed to enforce peace and protect the citizens, were ambushed by the terrorists. The attackers, in three tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and other vehicles from surrounding built-up areas, launched a surprise assault on the checkpoint.

“The attack resulted in the death of five armed forces personnel. The military mourns these soldiers’ loss, as each death in battle is a profound tragedy. Investigations into the attack are ongoing.

“It must be reiterated that the terrorists’ lifeline is the support of the people, which IPOB exploited to carry out this attack. Winning the war without public support is nearly impossible, and this situation highlights the challenges faced.

“Accordingly, it is imperative for the military to retaliate against this heinous act.

“The military’s response will be fierce. We will apply overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their complete defeat.”
