Chief of Defence Staff Warns of Possible Action if Protests Escalate

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has issued a stern warning regarding the ongoing nationwide protests, stating that the military will intervene if the situation escalates beyond control.

Addressing the press on Wednesday, the CDS emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order during the demonstrations. He highlighted the military’s readiness to step in should the protests become violent or pose a significant threat to national security.

The CDS expressed understanding of the citizens’ rights to peaceful protest but reiterated that any deviation from lawful and peaceful conduct would not be tolerated. “While we recognize the democratic right to protest, we will not hesitate to act decisively if the protests escalate and threaten public safety or national security,” he stated.

He called on protest organizers to ensure that their activities remain peaceful and lawful, warning that the military has been put on high alert and is prepared to act if necessary. The CDS also urged citizens to report any suspicious activities or signs of potential violence during the protests.

This statement comes amid growing concerns over the potential for protests to be hijacked by criminal elements, as witnessed during the EndSARS protests in 2020. The government and security agencies are keen to prevent a repeat of the widespread violence and destruction that occurred during that period.

The CDS’s warning underscores the delicate balance between safeguarding the right to protest and ensuring the safety and security of the nation. As the protests continue, the military’s stance will be closely watched by both protesters and the general public.
