By on July 9, 2024 0 195 Views

President Bola Tinubu announced the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The president did not reveal the name of the minister for the new ministry, as the nominee must be submitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other cabinet members attended the inauguration.

President Tinubu had previously approved the establishment of the Presidential Committee on Livestock Reform on September 15, 2023, to address recurring conflicts between herders and farmers. The committee’s formation followed the submission of a report from the National Conference on Livestock Reforms and Mitigation of Associated Conflicts in Nigeria.

In addition to announcing the new ministry, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of modernizing Nigeria’s livestock sector. He highlighted the need for innovative solutions and sustainable practices to boost productivity, ensure food security, and promote peaceful coexistence between herders and farmers. The president also called for collaboration with international partners and stakeholders to implement best practices and achieve long-term success in the livestock industry.

The newly established ministry is expected to play a crucial role in driving these reforms and enhancing the overall development of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
