Tragedy in Niger: Mining Site Collapse Kills One, Traps 30

A devastating incident has occurred in Galkogo village, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger, where a mining site collapse has resulted in the death of one person and trapped more than 30 others. According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), six persons have been rescued with severe injuries.

The Director-General of NSEMA, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed the incident, which occurred on June 3, and attributed the collapse to heavy rainfall impacts on the soil. Rescue efforts are ongoing, but the team had to temporarily retreat from the site due to continued falling debris.

The agency has deployed excavators to the site to aid in the rescue operations. However, the efforts are being hindered by insecurity in the area, with reports of persistent bandit attacks in Shiroro and Mashegu local government areas.

In a related incident, bandits attacked Adogo Malam village on June 2, kidnapping six persons, and also raided Tunga Kawo, an adjoining community, abducting over 20 people and stealing cattle.

The situation is dire, and the agency is working tirelessly to rescue those trapped and provide aid to the affected communities.
