Obasanjo Calls on Leaders to Prioritize Food Security Amid Growing Concerns
Obasanjo Urges Leaders to Prioritize Food Security
Former President Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo has called on leaders to place greater emphasis on food security, which he referred to as “stomach infrastructure.” Speaking in Sokoto, Obasanjo highlighted the importance of this issue during the formal unveiling of 136 housing units, purchased at a cost of N1.820 billion by the Sokoto State government, aimed at providing affordable housing for low-income earners and other citizens.
Obasanjo is on a two-day working visit to Sokoto State at the invitation of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, where he is unveiling several projects. He emphasized that while food security is paramount, personal and health security are also important but should take secondary priority.
The former president commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto for his remarkable achievements in transportation, road construction, agriculture, and housing projects. He likened the governor’s leadership qualities to those of a “stallion horse,” praising his strong, energetic, and resilient leadership.
“Your impressive accomplishments within just one year in office have set you on a promising path,” Obasanjo said. “These initiatives will undoubtedly enhance your prospects for a second-term mandate.”
Obasanjo also lauded Senator Aliyu Wamakko and Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar for their significant contributions to the state’s development. He described Wamakko as a commendable political mentor and the Sultan as a role model within the caliphate.
“Wamakko has proven to be a great mentor, with Governor Sokoto being an exemplary mentee,” Obasanjo noted.
Governor Aliyu Sokoto, in his remarks, stated that the housing projects align with his campaign promises to deliver human-oriented initiatives that improve the welfare and standards of living for the state’s residents. He highlighted the state’s commitment to various development projects, including road construction, agricultural support, and healthcare improvements.
“We are dedicated to the ongoing development of the state, ensuring that all sites are equipped with modern facilities such as Islamiyya schools, markets, and playgrounds,” Governor Sokoto said. He expressed his gratitude to the former president for honoring the invitation and being part of this historic occasion.
