A Call for Restraint: Tinubu Speaks Out Amidst Growing Tensions Surrounding the Emir of Kano Position

The Council of Ulamas in Kano has urged President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to avoid using federal authority in a manner that could incite serious crises and destabilize Kano amid the ongoing Emirate Council dispute.

In a statement released on Saturday, the forum of Islamic scholars in Kano, Ulama, expressed their concerns about the potential for recent events to escalate into chaos if not handled with care.

“The Council of Ulamas is concerned that recent developments in the Emirate, if not managed properly, could lead to significant disorder. Therefore, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must take all necessary steps to maintain peace in the state,” the statement read.

“Kano State is one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria despite its political complexity. The recent happenings in the Emirate, if not carefully handled, could escalate and degenerate into chaos. It is imperative for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take all necessary steps to maintain peace in the State.

“Mr. President, as the nation’s leader, should not allow the contest for a royal stool to escalate into violence. We urge Mr. President to let the people of Kano State resolve these issues amicably without the use of force or loss of lives.

“Kano State is one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria; therefore, we, the undersigned, call on both contending parties to use civil means to resolve their differences and allow peace to reign in the state. As major stakeholders in the state, we want Mr. President to intervene and assure the contenders.”

The statement emphasized that the State Government needs the cooperation and support of the Federal Government.

“While it is within the State House of Assembly’s purview to enact laws for good governance, the State Government requires the Federal Government’s cooperation and support. The State Assembly amended the Kano State Emirates Law, and the Governor assented to it.

“One person challenged the law in court, claiming it violated his fundamental human rights. He is entitled to his rights. The State Governor also has responsibilities as the Chief Executive of the State, as the act in question has already been completed. Therefore, there is no need for violent enforcement of any order or violent resistance to it, and we strongly oppose any measures that would escalate the conflict in the State.

“The State Assembly amended the Kano State Emirates Law, and the Governor assented. One person took the case to court, claiming the law violated his fundamental human rights. He is entitled to his rights.”

Tension in the state has risen following Yusuf’s order for the immediate arrest of the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero. This order came a day after Yusuf reappointed Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.
